Anansi and the Family Secret

Anansi was convinced the Turtle family had a secret treasure map. Why else were they always so happy?

He decided to trick the youngest turtle into revealing the secret. He asked about the boy’s parents, cousins, grandparents, and finally where the whole family had gathered.

Anansi crept to the house and peeked through the window.

There was no map.

The family sat together, laughing and sharing one perfect mango. The father cut a piece for the mother. The older sister passed a slice to her younger brother. The grandmother saved the sweetest piece for the grandfather.

Anansi watched until his clever plan slipped from his mind.

There was no buried gold and no secret island. The treasure was the way the family cared for one another—their patience, their jokes, and the ease with which one mango became enough for everyone.

Anansi turned away from the window. He realized that the strongest web in the world was not made from silk. It was made from the daily acts that keep people connected.

For once, Anansi did not try to steal the treasure. He went home thinking about the people he might invite to share his next mango.
