One day, Anansi decided he would host the greatest party the village had ever seen.

“Tomorrow,” he announced, “we will make a very big party!”

He went to Turtle. “My friend, bring three pumpkins.” He went to Snake. “You will bring five bananas.” He went to Jaguar. “And you—you will help me.”

The next day, everyone arrived. But Anansi had made no other plans. There was no music. There were no games. There was not even a pot ready for cooking.

“Anansi, what will we do?” Turtle asked.

Anansi looked left. He looked right. He shrugged. “I don’t know.”

The animals were ready to leave, sad and disappointed. Then Turtle looked at the pumpkins. Snake looked at the bananas. Jaguar looked at his strong hands.

“Maybe we can make porridge,” Turtle said.

“Yes!” said Snake. “And I can make bundiga.”

Jaguar smiled. “Then I will begin to play the drum.”

Soon, the whole village was working together. They cooked. They sang. They danced. The party Anansi had forgotten to plan became the best party anyone could remember.

Anansi learned that a plan is not only a command you give. It is a seed you plant. The best future is not the one you demand—it is the one you weave together with your friends.
